Subject: Ichikawa Ebizō V as Kumagai Jirō Naozane.
Date: 2-3/1850 (?)
Collection: Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University.
In the second month of 1850 the popular actor Ichikawa Ebizō V left Osaka for Edo. At the time of his departure the news spread that he would play the part of Kumagai Jirō Naozane, one of his favourite roles, 3/1850 at the Kawarazaki Theatre in Edo. Most likely this magnificent print was designed on the occasion of the actor’s departure and the announced performance in Edo, to please a circle of well-to-do kabuki fans in Osaka.
