122 c

Subject: Nakamura Utaemon IV as Ishikawa Goemon.

Collection: Mita Arts

This is a different version of the right-hand panel of the previous diptych. It lacks the text on the letter (a message written in blood on a torn-off sleeve), shows a different pattern on Utaemon’s undergarment and the crest on his coat in purple, and depicts a small part of a temple at top right. The architectural element refers to the gate of Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto, the location of the scene.
