Subject: Nakamura Utaemon IV as Ōboshi Yuranosuke.
Play: Kanadehon chūshingura.
For this print Sadamasu used some of the blocks that were carved for a print designed by his friend Sadanobu. The original print was published 9/1849 and depicts Kataoka Gadō II as Ōboshi Yuranosuke.1 The actor’s face is replaced with that of Nakamura Utaemon IV, Sadanobu’s signature with that of Sadamasu, and the background passage is completely altered, now showing silhouettes of buildings instead of detailed buildings.2 Similar silhouettes form the background in a print designed by Sadamasu’s pupil Hirosada. It was published 9/1849 and is a full-length portrait of Kataoka Gadō II as Ōboshi Yuranosuke.3
